Africa’s Biggest Cleanup 2024
Six African countries with over 1300 volunteers collect 15 tons of trash from their beaches for plastic free oceans
In honor of World Cleanup Day, we joined forces across Africa for Africa’s Biggest Cleanup and brought together over 1300 volunteers from Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Madagascar to clean their beaches. We collected a total of 15 tons of waste that were prevented from further polluting our oceans and coastlines. This wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the generous support of our partners Mueller and folia, who care just as much about sustainability as we do by using plastic reduced packaging and recycling.
For the third time Africa’s Biggest Cleanup targets coastal waste in countries where waste management isn’t sufficient at managing the amounts of waste produced.
Our team in Tansania cleaned several different beaches in the Kinondoni District with a contagious energy and collected over 10 tons of waste. In Kenya 700 kg were collected along Mvureni Beach in Diani Beach inspiring their community with exemplary teamwork. In Cameroon thanks to the team’s sunny mood, they collected over 2 tons of waste from Down Beach in Limbe despite the bad weather and turmoil. Elegushi Beach in Nigeria was relieved of over 900kg of waste while being decorated by the colorful signs of our team inspiring their community. Our team in Madagascar helped their island by cleaning 300 kg of waste from Amparihy Beach. Our team in Ghana collected 150 kg of waste from Osu Clottey Beach no matter the adversities. This amazing impact wouldn’t have been possible if not for the amazing organization of our ambassadors as well as the participation of every single volunteer working towards plastic free beaches and oceans. Community is the key to long-lasting change!
Knowing that children are the future of a more sustainable world, we were also hosting an upcycling workshop at a school in Tanzania transforming the collected waste into something new and valuable.
About 300 children could craft and learn about plastics in a fun way. This creative educational event is proudly sponsored by folia with a generous donation of crafts materials for the kids to create their upcycling projects. Our gratitude goes to Mueller for sponsoring this huge event again this year and for their partnership.
When like-minded people come together and join forces, we can change the world!
